NOTES:

 

 

1. The death of Joshua's wife Mary (Watson) on 22.8.1853 at the age of 31 left Joshua in quite a predicament. He had 3 children - ages 4, 7 and 11 and no mother for them.

 

2. Early 1855 land deeds show Joshua Lyes of Lucas Creek, a farmer, purchased 4.5 acres of land at Lucas Creek for 2 pound 10 shillings. Sold again in 1870 for 28 pound. In 1856 Joshua bought a statio from James Maxwell. This station was established before 1844 and was 42 acres. Joshua sold this in 1867 to Montgomery.

 

3. In 1846, William Whalan Money bought 6 acres of land at Lucas Creek which adjoined Joshua's original purchase In DFec 1848 Money sold this to Rev. David Bruce and this is the last known mention of Money.

 

4. 8 Oct 1847 the 691 ton barque Minerva arrived at Auckland with the 56th Regiment. Made up of many married men and familes. An incentive of land and other items had been offered. WQIlliam WHalanMoney was among these with his wife, Elizabeth and two children.

 

5.Birth notice: James Whalan Money 15.1.1849, son of William Whalan Money, a Fencible of Howick.

 

6. Birth Notice: Caroline Money  12.10.1851, daughter of William Whalan Money, a Fencible of Howick.

 

7. St Paul's Church register of baptisms: Albert, baptised 5.8.1855, birthdate 11.11.1854, son of William and Eliizabeth.

 

This all gets to be a bit of a mess but it seems the correct understanding is there seems to be threee family units: His, Hers and Theirs - as above.

 

JOHN & ESTHER LYES:

1. Married 1862 - John was 21, Esther was 15.

2. Joshua, their eldest, born Aug 1863, Glenlevette, NSW, Australia.

3. Feb, 1862 John had enrolled in Sydney with the 4th Waikato Regiment to fight in the Maori War.

4. March, 1865 John demobbed and given his land grant.

5. Joshua was born 21.8.1863, Glenvette, N.S.W., Australia. He was almost 3 when he and his mother Esther came to NZ to join his father John.

6. One month before his 7th Birthday, Joshua's mother Esther died of Typhus and he was taken in by Emma Billings, John's sister, who brought him up as her own.

327. John remarried, 18.12.1889 to Jane Elizabeth Herivel. They had 10 children. They lived for 9 years in Crosby's settlement, near Table Mountain raising cattle. They also owned a home at Irishtown (Thames). Jane often lived there with the younger children while John and the older children stayed on the farm.

8. Jane died on her daughter's farm Turua, 1965, age 93.

9. John died 1934, age 71.
