The Lyes family probably originated in France and were Protestants, Huguenots. Because of persecution and the martyrdom of thousands, many fled to England. Early parish records in Barrow are often difficult to read and the recorders often did not get exact spellings of names. The name Lyes appears in variants  in the Barrow parish records: Lyes, Lias, Lys, Leies, Lise, Lyeesse, Lygh, Leigh, Lyest, Lyus - to name a few. Though the name appears in records earlier than this, it is confirmed back to this marriage in 1754.
